Memorialization

Ways to leave a mark

At Lakewood, memorialization refers to all the ways that a specific life can be honored, in perpetuity, on our grounds.  It typically means marking the dates of birth and death and the name of the individual so that future generations can see—and remember—who and what has been lost.

Memorialization can be as simple as an engraved plate or as elaborate as a giant monument. It can mark the spot of ashes or a casket or can evoke the presence of an individual who was put to rest someplace else.

When ashes are scattered in water or the wind, for example, or rest in an urn on a shelf, there is often no special space for loved ones to return to…  no physical place that the life has been marked.  Memorializing the details of each human life helps us remember their place in history—and our hearts.

Lots

Lakewood Cemetery has more than 200 acres of traditional lots available in a variety of locations at various prices.

Single grave lots feature a bronze or granite marker with the name/dates of the person buried there. Family lots, sometimes called monument lots, may contain as few as two or three graves or several dozen. Each family lot has its own distinguishing monument, and markers may be placed at the gravesite of individual members.

Lakewood offers a choice of granite or bronze markers in a variety of styles, or you can choose to have our skilled designers create a custom pattern for you. What is a Monument Lot?
At Lakewood, monuments can be placed on double or family-size lots (two or more graves), depending on the location of the lot you choose in the cemetery. Only one central or family monument is allowed on a monument lot. Individual markers (with names and dates) may be placed at the grave sites of each family member within the lot.

Vaults

An urn vault is a container that is placed in a grave to hold the urn. Urn vaults protect the urn from the elements, and help keep the ground above from sinking in over time.

Urn vaults are available in a variety of materials and some can be customized with an emblem or engraving. You also have the option of placing memorabilia in the urn vault with the urn. Lakewood offers many vault choices, however in the case of Doric, we do not permit the Revere Urn Vault. In the case of Wilbert, we do not permit the Salute UV or the Universal.

Vaults (Burial)

Lakewood offers a selection of several different Doric Burial Vaults . A well respected name in the industry, Doric vaults are known for their handsome designs, excellent construction and outstanding durability. The difference in price depends largely on the level of durability, the look and length of warranty you choose. Vaults come in a variety of colors, and can be ordered in any custom color.

What is a Burial Vault?
A burial vault is a durable container inserted into a grave to protect the casket. Lakewood requires a burial vault (or concrete grave liner) to give the ground above an even appearance and help reduce the chance of a visitor tripping on sunken ground when walking in the cemetery.

Convenient and Affordable at Lakewood Cemetery
Lakewood can help you choose a burial vault or a concrete grave liner (a grave liner is a lightweight version of a burial vault). Financing is available, and all proceeds from sales are used to maintain Lakewood’s grounds and facilities to keep Lakewood beautiful and well groomed in all seasons.
